Scripture:
John 14
Translation: John 14.1Don’t
freak out [lit. your heart must not get troubled]! Believe in God and believe
in Me! 2In My Father’s House, there are many rooms. And if there
weren’t, I would tell you, because I’m leaving to prepare a place for you. 3And
if I leave and prepare a place for you, I’m coming again and I will take you
along with Me, so that wherever I am you will also be. 4And wherever
I’m going, you know the way.” 5Thomas was saying to Him, “Lord, we
don’t know where you’re going. How can we know the way?” 6Jesus was
saying to him, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the
Father, except through Me!” 7If you know Me, you will also know My
Father. And from now on you do know Him and see Him!”
8Philip was saying to Him, “Lord, show us
the Father, and that will satisfy us.” 9Jesus said to him, “I’ve
been with you for such a long time, and you don’t know Me, Philip? The person
who has seen Me has seen the Father. How are you saying, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Don’t
you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words that I’ve been telling you I’ve not
been speaking from Myself. And the Father Who stays in Me does His miracles. 11Trust
me I am in the Father and the Father is in Me! And if I wasn’t, believe because
of these miracles!
12Amen, Amen, I’m telling you, the person
who believes in Me—that person will do the works that I’m doing and greater
ones than these, because I’m going to the Father. 13And whatever you
might ask in My Name, I will do it, so that the Father can be glorified in the
Son. 14If you ask me for anything in My Name, I will do it. 15If
you love me, you will obey my commands. 16And I will ask the Father
and He will give you another Helper, so that He would be with you forever. 17The
Spirit of Truth, Who the world can’t receive, because they don’t see Him and
they don’t know Him. You know Him, because He stays with you and will be in you.
18I won’t leave you as orphans; I’m coming to you. 19A
little while longer and the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me,
because I’m alive and you will be alive. 20On that day, you will
know that I am in My Father and you are in Me and I am in you. 21The
person who has My commands and obeys them—that person is the one who loves Me.
And the person who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and
I will make Myself visible to him!
22Judas, not the Iscariot, was saying to
Him, “Lord, what is really happening that You are about to show Yourself to us
and not to the world?” 23Jesus responded and said to him, “If
someone loves me, he will obey my message and my Father will love him and come
to him and We will make a room for him. 24The person who doesn’t
love Me doesn’t obey My words and the message that you heard isn’t Mine,
instead it belongs to the Father Who sent Me. 25I really am telling
you these things while I’m staying with you. 26And the Helper, the
Holy Spirit, Who the Father will send in My Name—That One will teach you all
things and will make you remember all the things that I told you.
27I’m leaving peace for you. I’m giving
you My Peace. I’m not giving you just like the world would gives. Don’t freak
out and don’t chicken out. 28You’ve heard that I told you “I’m going
and I’m coming to you. If you love Me, you should rejoice that I’m going to the
Father, because the Father is greater than Me! 29And now I really am
telling you before it happens, so that whenever it happens you would believe. 30I’m
not going to speak with you about many things any longer, because the ruler of
the world is coming. And he has nothing in common with Me. 31Instead,
so that the world might know that I love the Father, and that I’m doing exactly
as the Father commanded Me, get up, let’s get away from here.

Jesus gives us Three Clear
Necessities in His Absence
i.
Jesus is clear. We must
believe in Him.
1.
We can come to God only through
Jesus.
2.
We can know God only
through Jesus.
a.
We can know Christ only
through the Holy Spirit.
b.
Believing in the Father
requires believing in the Son and in the Holy Spirit. Jesus affirms that God is
Triune. This is why it is so important to believe in the Holy Trinity, because
you can’t deny One Person without denying the other Two Persons.

We should believe in Him,
because Christ has given us good reasons to

Jesus is clear. We must
obey Him to love Him.
1.
It is easy to say that you
love Jesus, but it is often much harder to prove that you love Jesus. We need
to do what Jesus has told us to do to prove that we love Him, as a sign of our
love.

Married couples can’t just
say “I love you” they have to live “I love you”
2.
It is also easy for some
people to obey Jesus’ commands without any love for Jesus. It is true that
Jesus seems more concerned with love proven by obedience, but it would be just
as problematic to have obedience without a heart that belongs to and longs for
Jesus.

Pharisees were people who
obeyed God, but often had no heart for God
b.
Imagine a child who says
“I’m sorry” but clearly doesn't mean it.
iii.
Jesus is clear. We must be
courageous.
1.
This world can be scary.
Our mission can be scary.
2.
But Jesus hasn’t called us
to a life fear.
3.
Jesus has given us peace

Jesus gives us Three Clear
Encouragements in His Absence
i.
Jesus is clear. God the
Father will answer our prayers, so we must pray in Jesus’ Name.
1.
This helps us be at peace
and avoid fear, because we now have Someone to turn to when things get crazy,
or chaotic. We now have Someone to turn to when we need help.
2.
We have Someone to talk to
when we need to distress. But best of all, He is Someone Who can do something
about it.
ii.
Jesus is clear. God the
Father and Jesus will send the Holy Spirit to help us, so we must rely on Him.
1.
The Peace that Jesus gives
mainly comes in the Person of the Holy Spirit.
2.
The Holy Spirit stays with
us
3.
The Holy Spirit helps us.
4.
The Holy Spirit comforts
us.
5.
The Holy Spirit teaches us.
6.
The Holy Spirit reminds us.
iii.
Jesus is clear. Jesus has
gone to God the Father, but He will return for us, so we must have hope in His
return and be ready for it.
1.
One of the main hopes that
Jesus leaves us with is that even though He is in Heaven with the Father right
now, that is not the end of the story
2.
He is getting places ready
for each of us who trust in Him, places where we will live with God in glorious
peace forever
3.
He is coming back to get us
4.
We will one day see the
glorious relationship of the Trinity more clearly, and enjoy our relationship
with Him forever.
